Dear Eleni,
In the spirit of the season, we want to give thanks to you and the support that you’ve given to the oceans. We couldn’t have come this far without dedicated supporters like you. And here are some of the things that we’ve been able to accomplish this year:
- In Europe, we’ve been able to reduce destructive driftnet usage. Morocco has banned drift netting and Turkey has pledged to eliminate them in 2011.
- Months after the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the Senate has yet to pass any laws to make offshore drilling in our oceans any safer. Almost 20,000 supporters have told the Senate that the time is now to support the Oil Spill Response Bill and that the coastal communities can’t wait.
- The Chilean government established a marine protected area around the Island of Sala y Gomez, near Easter Island. Oceana and other groups have been promoting the protection of this area, which still remains virtually unexplored, and which may well be one of the last pristine vulnerable marine ecosystems in the Pacific.
- Since Monday, almost 18,000 supporters have contacted Secretary Salazar to use better science to determine the impact that oil drilling will have in the Arctic.
Thank you.
For the oceans,
Andrew Sharpless
